A Labyrinth of History and Architecture
Chartres is a French medieval town in the Eure-et-Loir department, about 90 km from Paris. Home to historic 16th-century buildings, half-timber houses, narrow streets and large squares, this well preserved city will amaze you with its beauty.
The 13th-century Cathedral of Chartres is the city’s main landmark and a famous site of Christian pilgrimage. On the back side of the Cathedral, travellers will find a Grass Labyrinth, date back to around 1200. According to the tradition, pilgrims used to go to the centre of the labyrinth in order to receive the grace of God.
The Massacre Bridge is one of the bridges crossing the Eure River, which flows right to the heart of the old part of the city. Chartres has also beautiful churches like the St. Aignan and the St. Martin-au-Val.
